Mecbeth, as a tragedy, presents us a vivid picture about how a noble man, Mecbeth, Thane of Clamis, Thane of Cawdor, murdered Duncan, the king of Scotland. The sophisticated arrangement of the plot, the inner struggles of the characters, the complex human relations and the unique mysterious supernatural power-the three witches all are the shining spots in this tragedy, which also impresses the readers and viewers around the world. Besides that, there is a special particular we should pay attention to and analyse in details-the role of darkness and night play in the story. As a kind of background, darkness and night indeed attribute their essential importance to the success and population of Mecbeth. Since the meaning of night and darkness is varied corresponding to the change of the context, I will interpret it from six aspects.
First and foremost, night and darkness is used as an indication of killing, death and murder.
"Come thick night", "and you shall put this night's great business into my dispatch". It means that Mecbeth and Lady Mecbeth planned to murder Duncan at the night when Duncan lived in their castle. "Let not light see my black and deep desire". I think "black desire" means Mecbeth's desire to become the king after he heard the prophecy. That's his secret, hidden in his heart. He didn't want other people to read what he thought, so he was disguised as wearing a ile and as being loyal to Duncan.
In addition, night and darkness shows the killing of Banquo and Fleance."Then is his father's, must embrace the fate of that dark hour", "Whiles night's black agents to their preys do rouse", "dark hour" and "night's black agents" are used as an expression to kill Banquo and Fleance by the three murderers assigned by Mecbeth, because Mecbeth believed in witches' words that Banquo and Fleance was a threat to his throne.
In my point of view, night and darkness representin源于:科技论文写作www.618jyw.com
g killing, death and murder can completely shows the dark side of Mecbeth-his cruel, vicious and wicked deeds and also oids repetition, highlighting a dreadful and awful scene.
Secondly, I think night and darkness is used to establish a basic mood or keynote for the tragedy. In Mecbeth, there are some"night" standing for a terrible, disorderly and fearful background and working as a augur."The night has been unruly." Lennox didn't know Duncan had already been killed and that means that night was disorderly and unusual and something unexpected might occur. Following his words, Mecbeth answered"Twas a rough night". Mecbeth showed, after killing Duncan, that he had a complex feelings. He did it after a long period of inner struggles-he wanted to be the king but he was afraid of murdering and he didn't want to be a traitor either. Thirdly, darkness and night is closely related with the three witches and their arts of black magic. "Sleep shall neither night nor day. Hang upon his penthouse lid." The sailor could not he a sound sleep neither night nor day, which shows how strong their power is. We can also see it as a foreshadowing for the truth of the witches' prophecy of the fate of Mecbeth and Banquo. "The instruments of darkness tell us truth." "the instruments of darkness" refers to the witches as evil witchesin a mystery play usually depicted as wearing a black coat and pointed hat. At the same time, it reveals the witches are frighting, scaring and hermetic.
Fourthly, there are some other meanings about night and darkness."but this sore night hath trifled former knowings" It states that Duncan's sudden death is a surprise to people. "And yet dark night strangles the treling lamp. Is't night's prominence, or the day's shame. That darkness dose the face of earth entomb" I think that this darkness and night are associated with human beings' vicious and wicked behiours, symbolizing all people's secret desires. For Mecbeth, this desire is betrayal, usurpation and regicide.
Fifthly, night and darkness is not only applied to Mecbeth, it also used for Malcolm."Wiped the black scruples, reconciled my thoughts" It shows Malcolm suspected of Macduff's loyalty. He didn't assure whether Macduff was dispatched by Mecbeth to sound out his intention.
Last but not least, night, sometimes in the play, just indicates the time literally, which tells the readers when the event takes place. For example, "I dreamt last night of the three weird sisters." "I believe drink ge thee the lie last night." "I must become a borrower of the night." The night chooses its basic and natural usage, and according to this time hint, we can clearly sense what was the time when Banquo saw the witches, the porter drank a lot at night and Banquo would ride his horse at night, which pes the way for his murder.
In conclusion, night and darkness takes an internal part in the play to express the emotions of the characters, to describe the context of the plot and to introduce the theme of the tragedy. It is an essential element in a play.
